The issue of slavery is a complex one. Of course, it is still popular in Islamic countries and sex slaves are used and traded among some of the richest people in the West.
The mentality of our Founding Fathers was much different than our own. The slaves they bought were already slaves, of course, and the laws of the United States would have ended that "peculiar institution" by the 19th Century without Lincoln's war of aggression against the South. The importation of slaves was illegal long before 1860 and tariffs punished the South (particularly the people of South Carolina) to the point that, like Russia in 2022, they had no recourse besides claiming nullification and secession.
