The events unfolding in the last 6 years reveal not the fight for democracy but the weakness of it. The biggest misapprehension of democracy is that the voting booth is the people’s instrument of change over their would-be rulers when quite the reverse is true. We could call the whole experience “Socrates’ revenge” since he was killed for his antagonism to democracy. Our suspicions should have been excited when failed totalitarian Mikhail Gorbachev first began to advocate for democracy just after his ignominious rule began to crumble like the Berlin Wall. He wasn’t advocating for freedom, or for the rights of man, or any other such enlightenment principle but for the nebulous idea of the plebiscite. It was Alexis de Tocqueville who reminded us that democracy could be the worst tyranny of all because it required no pretense of underlying moral principles while a king had to at least pretend to be favored by God and thus pay begrudging homage to his precepts. We never considered, or have long forgotten, that the quality of a civilization is not predicated upon the number of things you can vote on but the dearth thereof. The totalitarians smile as I say this since they consider obviating the vote absolutely essential to their despotic ends. And our friend and genius Mr. Hobbs would say that it’s the struggle for power, including it’s unhelpful diffusion into bicameralism, or other forms of government, that leads to malevolence and that run counter towards the betterment of mankind. But on other end of that spectrum would be voluntarism, which comes at the despots’ expense. The beginning of that form of government, which really would fulfill the definition of “self rule” is to finally admit that taxation is theft and thus sever, once and for all, the unholy bonds between sociopathy and human evolution. Until then, the fight over human flesh, and the enslavement thereof, will continue. We thank our brilliant forefathers for letting us out of our cage but it’s now time to cut the leash of taxation. It’s time for mankind to get up on its hind legs and walk. It’s time to be free.
