Rachel Levine slams laws dictating when children can begin transgender medical therapies

PALO ALTO, Calif. (TND) — U.S. Assistant Secretary of Health Rachel Levine insisted during a Stanford Medicine continuing education program for healthcare professionals that "pediatric experts" should be the ones determining the appropriateness of transgender medical care for minors, not state laws that Levine believes seek to "politicize" this care.

It's very important to note that the fact that the appropriateness of a range of medical treatments – evaluations and treatments – of people who are transgender and transgender youth is thoroughly grounded in medical research," Levine insisted. "And we do not need state laws and actions that dictate principles of transgender medical care by us, pediatric experts."

Levine's opinion that medical treatments for trans youth, such as puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and gender change surgeries, are "thoroughly grounded in medical research," has been contested by critics.

Systematic reviews on hormonal treatment for young people show a trend of low-quality evidence, small sample sizes, and medium to high risk of bias," an April memo from the Florida Department of Health reads.

Florida's Department of Health, headed by Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, has been a leader in challenging the idea that puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and gender surgery are medically necessary and safe for minors.

Ladapo and the Florida Department of Health responded to the Biden administration's public support for minors' access to these procedures by releasing their own guidelines restricting those under 18 from being able to obtain them. The department cited a "lack of conclusive evidence, and the potential for long-term, irreversible effects."

Earlier this year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added a warning to a drug commonly taken as a puberty blocker due to concerns it was causing brain swelling and other serious health risks among adolescents.
